Join David in an exclusive workshop offered for the first time in Milwaukee.

Here we discover the secrets of persuasive reflections and, how to create the illusion of elements floating on the water and those submerged beneath the water. We learn how to paint the flora and rocks standing beside and within water.  We learn how to cast the spell of water in motion with nature’s reflections, wind lines, distant space, and natural luminance.

David Allen Dunlop is admired for his relentless pursuit of researching Old Masters by studying primary sources like the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci and Leon Alberti's 1436 instruction book, "Della Pictura." An instructor in his own right, Dunlop pursues experimental methods and teaching techniques stretching back to the Renaissance.  

"After seeing 17th Century Dutch and Italian paintings on copper and pietra dura (usually alabaster), I had to try my own hand at these variably reflective surfaces using the translucent oil painting techniques of the old masters. I was determined to use contemporary materials, steel and aluminum, as well as the more venerable copper and gold." - David Dunlop

The result is a modern vision structured with masterful, old world technique. Born in 1951, Dunlop received his Masters of Fine Arts degree from the Pratt Institute, New York, NY, and studied post-graduate printmaking at the R. Blackburn Studio, New York, NY. David has won numerous awards in juried exhibitions, including a Daytime EMMY Award for his writing of a PBS series on painting techniques, "Landscapes Through Time."

David Dunlop's work is exhibited in galleries across the U.S., including Connecticut, Florida, Oregon, and Wisconsin, as well as in several corporate collections. He currently lives and works in Connecticut.

David won an Emmy and a CINE Golden Eagle Award in 2009 as the engaging host and writer of the 13-show national PBS television series, Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop.

Painting the Environment: A Two-Day Oil Painting Workshop

Join Stacy Kamin for a two-day workshop exploring the art of painting the environment in oils. Working from reference photographs carefully selected by Stacy, students will learn how to transform an ordinary scene into a beautiful painting through thoughtful observation and a deeper understanding of the language of painting.

Through demonstrations and individualized instruction, students will explore expressive brushwork, creating the illusion of form, maintaining the freshness and vitality of each brushstroke, and the thoughtful control of values, color, edges, and color temperature. Rather than simply copying the reference, students will learn to simplify complexity, strengthen composition, and make purposeful artistic decisions that lead to stronger, more beautiful paintings.

Designed for both beginning and experienced oil painters, this workshop provides a supportive learning environment where each student receives personalized instruction tailored to their individual level. By the end of the workshop, students will have a deeper understanding of how to organize a painting and confidently use the fundamental principles of representational painting to create expressive, beautifully crafted works.
